A thought
for the day!
But those who hope in the Lord will renew
their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:31 New International Version)
Isaiah
has spent a good bit of time in his prophetic ministry reminding the people of God of the consequences of sin. The northern
kingdom of Israel was carried into exile not only as punishment for their continual disobedience, but also to become an example
for the people of Judah as to the punishment of God for sin.
Beginning with this chapter the prophet looks forward
to a time when punishment has been meeted our for sin. Instead of saying "I told you so," Isaiah reminds God's
people about the love of God. While it is true that Judah will be punished for their sin, it is even more true that
the steadfast love of the Lord endures forever.
Hope is what enables the people of God to endure trials and face
the future. The strength we have to overcome obstacles and proceed on our journey comes from our God. The majestic
eagle serves as a reminder: just as it floats on the currents of winds by its strong wings, so, shall we, soar in our
journey to God.
(I am going on vacation for a few days,
so no new devotion until Wednesday, September 8. DRS)
