Our Heritage
First Christian Church is identified with the communion of believers
known as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This movement began during the Great Awakening of the early 19th
century on the American frontier as a restoration movement for the New Testament Church.
Our church was founded in 1893, and the current building
was erected in 1918. Two major educational additions have been added: one in 1940 and the other in 1960.
Our history continues into the 21st century as we seek to be a vibrant part of the Beckley community.
In an attempt to restore the vital spirit of the New Testament,
we emphasize the universal name "Christian," the weekly observance of the Lord's Supper, baptism by immersion upon profession
of faith, plurality of ministry, and the priesthood of all believers.
While we accept the authority of the Bible we also believe that
"where Scripture speaks we speak, and where Scripture is silent we are silent." Therefore, no attempt is made to dictate
a biblical interpretation, and "Jesus Christ is Lord" is our only confession.
We endeavor to create an atmosphere of Christian love, understanding,
cooperation, and unity where people of varying beliefs and backgrounds can find genuine fellowship and enjoy a spiritual home.
Our Vision
The church of the 21st century faces new challenges in heralding
the Gospel. Our vision for ministry within the Beckley community is to provide a worship atmosphere where we encounter
God; to offer educational opportunities that challenge us to think critically about faith; to enjoy fellowship with one another
in a spirit of Christian love; and, to reach out into our community and share Good News through witness, service, and discipleship.
